Photovoltaics will play a significant role in our sustainable energy future.
Our current, fossil-nuclear energy based generation system is a discontinued model. There are an abundance of energy scenarios for the coming decades and they expect to increase with renewable energy. The rapid expansion and the rapid cost reduction of PV in Germany have already overtaken many of these studies. The long-term scenarios and strategies for the development of renewable energies in Germany carried out on behalf of the Federal Ministry for the Environment predicted that towards the end of 2020 there will be a capacity of 53 gigawatts from an installed PV. A study by the Federal Environment Agency concludes that in 2050 a generating power based entirely on renewable energy sources will be possible from both a technical perspective and in an environmentally sound manner.
